PATH
Jesus saves the Lost by CALLING, TRAINING and SENDING the Found
POINTS
Responding to the CALLING
Read and compare Matthew 4.18-22, 9.9-13; Mark 1.16-20, 2.13-17; Luke 5.1-11, 27-32
o Discuss the significance of the early disciple’s humble professions and low social status.Do you think these factors helped the disciples “leave everything?” If so how?
o Discuss the attitude of the “religious” toward Jesus and his selection of disciples. What does their attitude say about their understanding of what Jesus came to do?
o Discuss Jesus’ response to the religious. What do you think Jesus was trying to point out to them?
o In what ways do you struggle with pride, self-righteousness and independence? Are you willing to address these areas? How?
o Re-read Luke 5.8-11. REMEMBER that Jesus is God then REPENT of your sin of pride and RETURN to a life of joyful obedience following your REDEEMER!
Engaged in the TRAINING
Read Matthew 15.32; Mark 7.14-18, 8.34, 12.41-44; Luke 6.17-19 [note both the private and public contexts of these passages]
o Consider the ways our church trains its people for discipleship (ie. Sunday preaching/teaching, Life Groups, Bible Study, Awana, Remedy). How is our setting of training similar and different from these passages?
o What are the advantages to training within in the church? What are the disadvantages?
o Consider and discuss ways that we as the church might engage in training outside the “church.” Are you willing to engage? Why or why not?
Obedient in the SENDING
Read Matthew 10.5, 16; Mark 3.14, 6.7; Luke 9.1, 10.1-3; John 20.21
o Consider and discuss the incomprehendible nature of Jesus’ love and sacrifice for us in obeying the Father’s command to leave heaven to save us. Has Jesus’ willingness and commitment affected your obedience? Why or why not?
o In what ways are you being “sent?” How are you responding?
o What are your strengths and weaknesses in being sent? What are you doing to grow in your obedience to and image of Jesus?
PONDER
